Name:

Ronald Swan

Age:

48

Referral:

Type II Diabetes (NIDD)

Programme:

Being 40+ and overweight were two factors contributing to Ronald's condition.

Therefore as well as a change in diet these were two things we were able to address with a tailored fitness programme.

Primarily we wanted to focus on cardiovascular exercise, we began with combinations of walking, cycling, and rowing starting at a gentle pace and over time we gradually increased this at a level which was comfortable for Ronald to progress at until he was exercising at a greater intensity for a longer period of time.

After five week, we introduced a general weight lifting and stretching programme to help assist the weight loss by building up muscle content.

Results:

After just 10 weeks, Ronald had lost 7kgs in weight, and had reduced his body fat from 38% to 33.5%. Not only had the weight loss helped in reducing his blood pressure, the reduction of body fat meant less insulin resistance, and hence providing him with better control over his diabetes.

Name:

Heidi Marshall

Age:

27

Referral:

Weight Loss

Programme:

For Heidi's programme we decided upon 2 sessions per week focusing primarily on cardiovascular exercise and life style changes.

This programme included a through warm up to prepare the muscles for exercise, and then began with a low intensity work out on the Treadmill, bike, cross trainer and rower. Once Heidi was able to sustain 10 minutes on each machine, we increased the intensity and speed of her exercise on a weekly basis.

Results:

This programme is a safe, structured and effective calorie burning workout, not only does it aid weight loss by targeting large muscle groups and exercising the heart. The regular exercise will also build muscle helping to increase the metabolic rate, which combined with lifestyle changes will lead to success in any weight loss programme.

Name:

Ted Edwards

Age:

64

Referral:

CVA (Stroke)

Programme:

Following his stroke Bill was lacking co-ordination, balance and strength in his left hand side.

As well as cycling and rowing, we did a lot of walking using bars for assistance, increasing the intensity as we went. We ended this programme with a gentle cool down and a series of stretches to help in improving his flexibility.

As Ted improved 5 weeks into the programme we introduced resistance machines to improve Ted's strength, targeting the major muscle groups.

Results:

His test results showed a marked improvement in his overall fitness. However most significant was the fact Ted threw away his walking sticks and can now walk long distances unassisted. That's progress!!

Name:

Bob Fear

Age:

37

Referral:

Hypertension/High Blood Pressure

Aim

Our priority was to help stabilise or even reduce Bob's blood pressure through a course of cardiovascular exercise. In some cases we have managed to help people come off medication or at least reduce the dosage which is proof that exercise can benefit people with Hypertension.

Programme:

10 minutes gentle cycling gradually increasing the level (1-3) to prepare the body for exercise. As bob was on medication to suppress the heart rate we couldn't use this as an indication of how hard he was working. Another method we use if people are on medication is the Rate of perceived exertion scale (RPE). This method works by using numbers relating to how the person is feeling and how hard they are working i.e. number 9 is very light 13 is somewhat hard and 15 is hard heavy. We encourage people to work between 11 and 14.

Bob started doing 5 minutes on the treadmill, rower, cross trainer and the bike gradually increasing the time by 1 minute per week (every 2 sessions). Once he was completing 10 minutes on each machine, we started to increase the intensity by increasing the levels and speed.

Results:

After ten weeks a huge difference could already seen in Bob's heart rate. His blood pressure had reduced to a safe reading and he was discharged by his GP for a six month period. This was great news for Bob because prior to starting this programme his GP was considering increasing his medication.

Name

Kate Mcniece

AGE

56

Reason for personal training

Sedentary lifestyle, overweight, high blood pressure.

Kate needed to get fit for holiday which would involve a lot of walking.

Kate's lifestyle and excess weight made it difficult to even walk 100 yards without being breathless and exhausted.

Programme

For the first few sessions I chose some gentle walking routes ranging from ½ a mile to 2 miles. After a gentle warm up and stretch we tackled one these routes and recorded how long it took for Kate to complete them.

The first signs of difficulty were Kate's breathing. She became breathless very quickly. I introduced a longer slower warm up which helped.

After a few sessions Kate was achieving a lot more, she was becoming less tired and her times were getting faster.

With this improvement I introduced some new routes with some small inclines and light circuit training to strengthen and tone her muscles.

Kate's fitness improved rapidly. In ten weeks her times were being cut by half, she felt so much fitter and had lost a stone in weight.

I felt it was time for new challenges. With her new found confidence I introduced her to the Gym and we started some light jogging.

Three months later Kate is attending my Boxercise class once a week. We are training twice a week for the “Race for life” which is 3 miles in distance and is a charity race for people that have been touched by cancer. Our aim is to run/jog the whole distance.

Results/conclusion

Kate and I have been training for approximately one year. In that time her fitness level has improved a great deal. When she started she could hardly walk 100 yards without being physically challenged, and now she can run for 3 miles consistently. Her general aches and pains have reduced, her quality of life has improved, and she has more confidence and self esteem. Her blood pressure has come down and she feels fantastic.
